The North by Northeast festival will have a new look again this year, albeit a new look that’s oddly familiar.

After trying to gain a foothold as a ticketed event in the barren Toronto Port Lands for the past two years, NXNE announced Wednesday that it will return to Yonge-Dundas Square – the site of momentous gigs by the likes of the Stooges, the Flaming Lips, the National and St. Vincent during North by Northeasts past – for three days of free shows from June 15-17, transforming a chunk of Yonge St. into a festival village with comedy shows and more.

Heading into its 24th year in 2018, the festival – the full program of which will run from June 8-17 – also promises to offer an expansion of its club-based “Curator Series” that saw local musical luminaries like Broken Social Scene’s Brendan Canning, Billy Talent’s Ian D’Sa and July Talk’s Leah Fay programming lineups for venues.
